Maskinongé

Each visit to Maski rekindles our love for rural landscapes and local products. Because while the Baluchon, Sacacomie, Lac à L’Eau Claire, and Lac Blanc are names that continue to live up to their reputation, there is no shortage of hidden treasures to surprise us. Whether it’s the vibrant village of Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc, the iconic Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, or the very agrotouristic village of Saint-Sévère, one thing is certain: Maskinongé competes with creativity to offer us a stay synonymous with change of scenery and good times.

Portrait of the Region

Located in the east of Mauricie and accessible via highway 40, the MRC of Maskinongé is a rich and diverse region. Once a land of forestry and agriculture, the area has maintained its rustic charm while developing into a popular tourist destination for lovers of beautiful (and tasty 😋) things. #BestPoutineInQuebec #TheColorsOfTheEarth

Maskinongé’s natural environment makes it an ideal place for outdoor activities. Road and mountain biking enthusiasts will undoubtedly find something to their liking thanks to the 150 km of cycling network and Mont SM. The same goes for hikers heading to the Mauricie National Park, or anglers enjoying their favorite leisure on one of the many lakes (Saint-Alexis-des-Monts alone has 600! 🦠).

Agrotourism enthusiasts? You will make magnificent discoveries in the local farms and businesses, which aim to showcase regional products and local crafts.

Finally, one cannot talk about Maski without mentioning its renowned nature resorts. Few destinations, like the Hôtel Sacacomie, Pourvoirie du Lac Blanc, Auberge du Lac-à-l’Eau-Claire, and Le Baluchon Éco-villégiature, provoke such a feeling of escape in the region!

Other Amazing Facts About Maskinongé

  • The municipality of Louiseville (the most populous in Maskinongé) was named in honor of Princess Louise of England, daughter of Queen Victoria.
  • The name “Maskinongé” comes from Algonquin and means “deformed pike.” At the time, this fish was abundant in the river of the same name.
  • By itself, the municipality of Saint-Alexis-des-Monts has… 600 lakes! That’s a lot of pike — deformed or not — to fish! 🎣
  • Not-too-amazing-but-we-always-love-to-boast fact: Fred Pellerin was born in the charming village of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, creating an unparalleled world of tales and legends around it in the region. 🥰
  • In Saint-Paulin, there is the chemin du Bout-du-Monde. In the past, the road north led to an uncleared land. A post office was established there, named “Au bout du monde” (a name also found on its official stamp). American tourists, passionate about hunting and fishing, would travel to said post office to have their mail stamped, thus symbolically attesting they had traveled “to the end of the world.”

For More Tips and Activities, Ask the Pros!

Tourisme Mauricie is like a mother hen. She had 6 offspring – the 6 territories of the region – whom she loves equally (or almost. Everyone knows the mischievous one is always the most endearing 🤪). And as a good mother with no bias, she’s going to tell you that her children are the BEST. So, don’t hesitate to consult them to stock up on advice and activities concerning their respective territories! (Did we really just compare ourselves to a doting mother?)
