Founded in 1634, Trois-Rivières is Québec’s second-oldest city—after Québec City (1608) and before Montréal (1642).
Its name comes from a charming optical illusion: the Saint-Maurice River splits into three channels as it meets the St. Lawrence River, between Île de la Potherie and Île Saint-Quentin. So it looks like three separate rivers—hence the name! (And let’s be honest, “Three Rivers” does sound cooler than just one. ✌️)
Crowned the world’s paper capital in 1922 thanks to its major role during the golden age of paper mills, Trois-Rivières later became the poetry capital of Canada in 1985 and the country’s cultural capital in 2009.
Today, the city is bursting with energy—filled with activities and great restaurants that delight visitors of all ages. Whether it’s summer or winter, you can stroll the historic streets, visit museums, browse local shops, enjoy the vibrant dining scene, and take part in the many events that make Trois-Rivières a city that never sleeps.
Because in Mauricie, Trois-Rivières reigns as the queen of celebrations—and boredom simply isn’t on the agenda! 💃
